Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about neuropsychiatric assessments, treatment approaches, and what to expect when working with Dr Bourke.

How do you treat fatigue?

Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify underlying causes, followed by a tailored plan that may include education about the diagnosis, medication if indicated, and support from allied professionals including psychologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists in the more direct rehabilitation from fatigue.

We use an eclectic approach considering neurobiological, psychological, and social factors, with management plans involving medication where appropriate, psychological interventions and tailored rehabilitation techniques delivered by specialist allied professionals, in collaboration other physicians or surgeons already involved in your care.

The treatment of FND begins with a comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment, examining the biological and psychological influences involved and how these collide with events and demands in daily life to give rise to symptoms in your specific context. Treatment approaches vary but will typically involve consideration of pharmacological approaches (medicine) and specialist psychological intervention. Dependent upon the precise nature of the symptoms involved, additional specialists would also be involved in the assessment and treatment of FND, including neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists, specialist physiotherapists and occupational therapists

The length of treatment involved for any condition will depend upon the condition itself, the treatment(s) employed and individual responses to these. An assessment of initial treatment response often provides a more precise answer as to the time frame to  more complete recovery. The focus of an initial assessment is on finding the most optimal means of promoting rehabilitation through the use of medication, and psychological and other interventions to support recovery.

Yes, I provide comprehensive assessments to differentiate between various causes of memory difficulties, including but not limited to dementia and the various causes of “brain fog”, and to identify underlying causes of attention and concentration symptoms.
